BCP (Business Continuity Plan)

Plain-Language Definition

A documented plan that describes how an organisation will continue operating during and after a disruptive event such as fire, flood, power failure, pandemic, or IT outage. For buildings, BCP covers maintaining essential services and enabling rapid recovery.

Technical Context

Building-related BCP elements: generator capacity and fuel reserves, UPS for critical systems, alternative water supply, emergency communication systems, alternate workspace arrangements, data backup and recovery, critical spare parts inventory. Governed by ISO 22301 (Business Continuity Management Systems).

Why It Matters

Every building will experience a disruptive event. Without a BCP, the response is improvised and slow. With a tested BCP, the organisation recovers in hours or days instead of weeks. BCP testing (desktop exercises and live drills) is as important as having the plan.
